The Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) is a visionary urban development project in southern Bhutan, conceptualized as a future economic and innovation hub grounded in Bhutanese values of mindfulness, sustainability, and Gross National Happiness. It is one of Bhutan’s most ambitious national initiatives, designed to transform Gelephu into a strategic gateway city connecting Bhutan with South Asia and global markets.
GMC is being developed under the leadership of the government and guided by the broader vision of the monarchy, aligning closely with Bhutan’s philosophy of balancing economic progress with environmental preservation and cultural integrity. Unlike conventional industrial cities, Gelephu Mindfulness City is planned as a “green and conscious city”, where infrastructure, business, and lifestyle are designed to support well-being, ecological harmony, and mindful living.
The city plan emphasizes:
- Sustainable urban design and green infrastructure
- Renewable energy and low-carbon development
- Smart logistics and cross-border trade facilitation
- Wellness, education, and healthcare hubs
- Innovation zones for startups, finance, and technology
- Integration of Bhutanese cultural and spiritual values into urban life
A key objective of GMC is to position Bhutan as a regional economic connector, especially by enhancing trade and connectivity with neighboring countries while maintaining strict environmental safeguards. It is expected to attract international investment in sectors such as green technology, tourism, sustainable finance, and wellness industries.
At the same time, GMC is not only an economic project but also a philosophical one. It reflects Bhutan’s unique development model, where progress is measured not only in GDP but also in the well-being of people and the preservation of nature.
Once fully developed, Gelephu Mindfulness City is envisioned as a global model for sustainable urban living, demonstrating how economic growth and mindfulness can coexist in a rapidly modernizing world.
